The modern history of the Grundy County Democratic Party dates back to 1970 when Marvin “Jake” Olson was elected sheriff. Other county and legislative offices were won in subsequent elections as voters chose Democrats like coroner James Reeves in 1972. In 1974 Democrats swept seats at several levels as Mary Jane Noonan was elected county clerk, Bill Button won for sheriff, Betty Olson won as treasurer, and Jerry Joyce was elected state senator. In 1976, Lana Phillips was elected county clerk and Ray Christensen joined Jerry in the General Assembly as state representative.

These officeholders established a tradition of excellence that has continued to this day. Democratic mayors such as Rick Alderson (South Wilmington) and Dick Kopczik (Morris) served numerous terms and often ran unopposed. When Democrats controlled the county board from 2006 till 2010 under the leadership of chair Frank Halpin, new Animal Control, Highway, and combined 911 dispatch centers were built. In addition, the courthouse was refurbished and a dilapidated grocery store across the street from the courthouse was purchased and turned into a much-need parking lot. A huge windfarm was constructed during these years in the southwestern part of the county which added to the tax base, provided jobs and clean energy, and provided added revenue for rural landowners.

The tradition of excellence has continued over the years by county clerk Kay Olson; sheriffs Gary Phillips, Jim Olson, Terry Marketti and Kevin Callahan; county treasurer Marcy Miller; State’s Attorneys Dave Neal, Lance Peterson, Sheldon Sobel and John Bates and coroners Leo Reeves and Bill Kelly as well as state senators Pat Welch and Patrick Joyce. State Representatives Mary K. O’Brien and Careen Gordon also served with distinction in the General Assembly. Numerous county board members and township and municipal officials have also served as excellent leaders seeking to improve our county.
